Medical handles care and rescue, Repair takes care of salvage and engineering, Starlines of people and cargo. Together they plan the flight to the site, the equipment needed and the transport back of the injured or of salvaged parts. The Group's headquarters is New Babbage on microTech. Its operations base is the hospital ship Goodwill, a decommissioned Endeavor of the Hope class in orbit around Yela; beside her lies the Dauntless, an Idris-P that has yet to become a mobile operations base.
Reece tells of these missions. Working with him are Dr. Alice Cordell, Craig Harker, Myra Voss, Ivo Brenner and Nadia Serrat. Their tasks, histories and decisions run through the logbook.

Rescue mission
Before launch we establish where help is needed, how we reach the injured and where we take them.
- Assess the situationAsk for position, condition of the injured and possible hazards.
- Reach the injuredDetermine landing site and the way to the injured, then begin treatment.
- Hand over patientsReturn flight to the Goodwill; inform the operating room. Anything we cannot operate on aboard goes straight to the sector hospital, Orison General.
Salvage mission
Before salvage we establish whether anyone is still on board, who commissioned us and what damage there is.
- Assess the wreckSearch for the crew, confirm the contract and secure the work area.
- Define the scopeDistinguish repair, parts recovery or salvage.
- Plan the transportPlan cargo space and return flight; decide when the mission must be aborted.
Transport contract
We choose a suitable ship, plan the route and agree who receives passengers or cargo at the destination.

Jalen's Flight Home
Alice discharges Jalen from the Goodwill, and Nadia combines his flight home with a delivery of spare parts for Grim HEX. An old photo from Craig's tool bag gets Craig talking about New Corvo and his sister Tessa.
The First Dauntless Protocol
For the first time we sit together aboard the Dauntless: six people in a frigate built for twenty-eight. Nadia puts a list on the table: which systems on our two ships are in service, and which of us keeps each one running. Craig works out how many people a ship this size needs just to operate, Alice says what she thinks of a sick bay with five beds, and Myra asks the question I have not answered in my plan.
05 / The Horizon
Project Dauntless
The Dauntless is our Aegis Idris-P: bought second-hand, parked in orbit around Yela beside the hospital ship Goodwill and so far not moved a single time. She is to become our mobile operations base. In the fourth chapter the crew works out what is still missing: more people, a second person for every task who can step in, and fixed rules, which they record in the first Dauntless protocol.
